PASSWORD TIPS
  • Keep your private information to yourself.  Only you should know your usernames and passwords and the security questions you answer about yourself.  If you want to be extra stealth, select a question and use a code name for your answer.  For instance, you could use the question, “what was the name of my first pet,” and instead of actually answering the question with “Bingo,” you can remind yourself that all of your answers are backwards.  So the real answer to your questions would be “O-G-N-I-B” which is Bingo spelled backwards.  You could even have a list for all of your answered questions that you come up with “dummy” names for all of your questions.  So if your first pet’s real name is “Fido,” you answer your security question with the dummy name “Bingo.”

  • Choose complex passwords that are hard to guess.  Choosing an uncommon username other than your first initial of your first name and full last name (ex. jdoe) is also important because this is half of what they need to login.  If they can’t guess your username, then it doesn’t do them any good if they know your password. 

  • If possible, choose a username and password that is different from your other online applications such as email, Facebook, etc.  This way if an online hacker hacks into one of these other services, when they try using the same credentials with your electronic banking, it won’t work.

  • Choose a password you can remember without writing it down.  If you do choose to write it down, store it in a secure location.

  • The longer the password, the tougher it is to crack.  Use a password with at least 8 characters.  Every additional character exponentially strengthens a password.

  • Try not to include any numbers from your accounts in your passwords.

  • Never share your password over the phone, in texts, by email, or in person.  If someone calls you first and wants you to provide information such as your social security number or account number, this is a scam.  The only time our bank employees would ask for your information would be if you initiate the call to us first and we need to identify you so we can verify your identity.  We do this because we don’t want someone else tricking us into disclosing any of your information.
